Turning the tables on viruses: How we will tackle future outbreaks in a new way
We are pleased to announce that M. Rizzato from TUM Institute of Virology will present the APPEAL project at Pint of Science Germany, taking place from 18–20 May 2026 in Munich.
Developing new antiviral medicines remains crucial, especially in light of emerging and recurring viral outbreaks. One major challenge is that viruses constantly evolve, which often causes existing drugs to lose their effectiveness or become completely ineffective.
In APPEAL, we are exploring a different strategy: instead of targeting the virus directly, we aim to strengthen human host cells so that viruses can replicate less efficiently.
The talk will provide insights into how we combine AI-driven data analysis, algorithm-based drug discovery, and cell culture models to combat viruses by strengthening the host cells.
